My work begins with a photograph. The origin of each piece is a photographic image that I have taken and often manipulated with one or more processes. The use of transfers, hand coloring, injection, solutions, encaustic, etched metal, mixed media, PS and AI are some of the methods I use.

Expanding my passion for photography new ways is extremely exciting.

Marcie Alkema is based in Plymouth, MA. Her photography journey began in 2007 at The New England School of Photography. At that time she was working as an RN in the OR at Boston Children’s Hospital. Working full-time days only allowed evening workshops. Once she started taking classes, she continued non-stop for 4+ years. She fell in love with portraiture in the studio and beyond. Her subjects were families, individuals with their pets, and graduating seniors, to name a few. Karli, her Newfie often posed in the studio in different outfits.

She introduced a volunteer pilot program at Children’s photographing infants and children in the critical care units. This project continued for several years until the move from Brookline to Plymouth. This was the most meaningful photography she has ever made.

After moving in 2015 she pursued still life and macro photography. She has continued with numerous classes in person and online expanding her knowledge with digital composition/manipulation, black & white photography, polaroid and polaroid manipulation, photography based transfers, sketching, mixed media, collage, encaustic, metal etching and AI-all of which are incorporated in some way with her photographic images.

Marcie considers herself fortunate to have gained knowledge from the instructors at NESOP and many other well known photographers and artists. Her photographs evolve and take on new dimensions. Picture the possibilities.
